History

The Retreat has a fascinating history as it was formerly a well known restaurant and hotel called The Jester, and something of a landmark in the beautiful market town of Leek.

The Barlow family bought The Jester in 1978 from the previous owner who had by then renovated the old King’s Arms pub, which had stood on that site for many years. He had by that time, incorporated the adjoining cottages from both sides of the building, one of which is now The Cottage at The Retreat. The Barlows successfully ran The Jester hotel and restaurant until 1991.

Yvonne Barlow and her daughter Vicki had an opportunity to purchase The Jester in 2003 and one which Yvonne and Vicki took with both hands in order to realise their dream of opening a warm and friendly Day Spa. The extra space would allow them to not only incorporate their existing hair and beauty business in Leek, but to also enable them to offer many more professional treatments in a comfortable and friendly environment whilst at the same time offering a very personal service.

The atmosphere of The Retreat has been carefully created so that the ground floor areas, housing The Hair Studio, manicure and pedicure areas, will be welcoming and uplifting. However, once you enter the themed first floor treatment rooms for ladies and gentlemen, relaxation areas and Spa, the mood will gently change to one of harmony and peace enabling you to escape from the stresses and strains of everyday life and the pressure of your hectic lifestyle.

The Cottage at The Retreat is owned by Jamie Barlow, Yvonne’s son, and is situated within the building but with a separate entrance from the off road car park. Guests are invited to enjoy any of the Day Spa’s facilities including the Jester Bistro.

Whether you are on business or on a short break, guests can be assured of a very warm welcome…..
